Decided on a whim of the moment to just drop everything at work and bail out of K.L. for a few days.
My architecture-lecturer cousin, Abg Long extended the invite to go up to Kuala Terengganu over the weekend along with his GF, Sue and her best friend Shuba. (note: Them being actual fitness trainers of the Fitness First variety led to the *exciting* experience of waking up mid-morning to the exotic sights of yoga. Mmmmmm~Yummy!)
Highlights of the trip includes:
* The huge Lord Muruga statue during our pit stop in Batu Caves.
* A gorgeous sunset on Pantai Temasek, midway between Marang and Kuala Gganu.
* Haji Embong's exotically designed/decorated flat in KT using a fusion of East & West.
* The recreated Kota Duyong Lama, a gateway to Warisan Melayu Gganu
* Kebok's (Local K Gganu painter) superbly furnished house utilising artefacts in a modern style.
Of course, this being a holiday and all...it wouldn't be complete without loads and loads of food. We sampled and tasted every imaginable local delicacy from Satar (A Gganu-ian Otak-Otak), to Nasi Dagang (with Ikan Kembong), to Nasi Lemak (with Ikan Kembong), to Nasi Tumpang (also with Ikan Kembong), to Keropok Ikan & Keropok Lekor.
Starting to notice a pattern here?
The Terengganu-ians LOVE their FISH !
In fact, I can only imagine one other person that can enjoy eating as much fish as them Gganu-ians. Too bad u ur *pilgrimage* clashed dates with my road trip eh, Ed? I would've loved to have u along to experience & share the culturally rich wonderfl sights and sounds I saw.....maybe next time, brat!
Neways, check out them exotic locales, architecture & interior design wonders, and not forgetting the mouth-watering cuisine.
P/S- All them pics were taken on my crappy 1.3 megapixel Nokia cameraphone. God, do I need a real digital camera(!)

East Coast Road Trip
|
|
One of my maternal cousins tied the knot over the CNY holidays. The following tells the tale of the harrowing 8 hour drive to and fro.
We took the Hilux up to Kelantan so there was many an hour spent behind the open back, just lazing under the twilight night sky as my father ramped the jeep up to top speeds....
Ach...the memories!
I gotta say, after witnessing a wedding and an engagement...hmmm getting hitched doesn't sound bad after all y'know.... NOT that I plan to get hitched anytime soon of course!
Just don't tell my dear Ma that...It'd break her lil' ol' match-fixin heart .....

Hari Raya Haji 2006
|
|
Had an impromptu Hari Raya Haji open house/celebration over the hols. Due to the short notice, most of the office/uni/high school peeps were unable to make it.
Most of the pics from the event are still in my sis' camera (now in Melbourne, O-Z)...so until she sends me them pics, enjoy these pics from the office peeps visit (courtesy of investment banker by day, snappy lensman by night; Clement~ do go check out the pics on his website!)

Gone' Fishin!
|
|
Met up with a few of my ex-high school mates over the Christmas hols. The passage of time hasn't changed what we had all those years ago.... we could still fall into an easygoin conversation as if it was only yesterday since we left high school.
Funny how the peeps you connected with back then will always be able to reconnect with you again after all this years.
I guess we got to know each other during the more innocent years where there was no facade which we put on in order to survive the day-to-day life of being an adult.
Oh I yearn for those simpler days again sometimes!
Neways, Bob and the ex-SMSU peeps cajoled this city boy for a fishing expidition.
Having never fished before...well let's just say I didn't catch anything that day...but dem guys sure are pros when it comes to fishin. Just check out their handiwork!

European Odyssey 2003: Venice, Italy (12th September)
|
|
I have to say, up til now (on this European tour) ; Venice must be the most STUNNING city I have seen yet!
It's sunny, bright surroundings; small, claustrophobic canals; chic, ancient, architecture; and the people !
I just love how the Italians speak their language....so melodic and alluring (unlike the Scotsmen low, gruttural, barbaric groans..aye!)
If u go there, u HAVE to get to Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square), the jewel of Venice where the Basilica di San Marco and the Campanile (Bell Tower) resides. There, pigeons flock and mock tourists brave enough to buy the peanuts sold nearby to attract them (I swear I nearly got attacked to death when I extended my hand full of peanuts to them!). Besides the Piazza, navigating the rest of Venice is a nightmare!
Everything looks small and connected on the map but when u actually try to walk around Venice, u'll find urself getting lost in the maze of little squares and courtyards. Instead of making ur safe passage thru Venice, u might just accidentally find urself in someone else's backyard or kitchen (that's how tight and enclosed most of the houses in Venice are!) or a dead end cut off by a waterway or canal.
Don't forget to also visit the Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge), a famous marble walwakway/bridge used by ancient traders of yore to sell their wares now turned into a tourist attraction with shops selling Venitian trinkets, masks, souvenirs and forged goods (got myself a Real Madrid Beckham shirt here!)
Check out some of the superb pics I managed to capture during my short one day stay in Venice.
This place is great enough to warrant another vist someday (hmmm...maybe for my honeymoon? One can always dream, non... )

European Odyssey 2003: Salzburg, Austria (11th September)
|
|
Salzburg was a short two hour rendezvous on our European tour before we head to Venice.
Famous for its castle high atop a hill, overlooking the rest of the valley (sure does make for good fortifications against marauding invaders in olden times innit?), also as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birthplace; plus being the place where most of the Disney musical "The Sound of Music" was shot....Salzburg proved to be a letdown while I was there.
Blame it on the crappy, chilly, wet & rainy September weather...but I just wasn't feeling it.
Granted the Castle and its furnishings were beautiful, the small town streets and its archaic buildings and town square quaintly exotic...but Salzburg just can't compare to Brussel's baroque visions, Munich's gothic charm or Amsterdam's debauched delights.....
Maybe I've just been spoiled by these other far, far, more exciting cities I guess....or maybe I'm just an uneducated average tourist / philistine with no eye for true beauty and art...hahaha
Whatever.

European Odyssey 2003: Munich, Germany (10th September)
|
|
Compared to the other European cities I've been to on this Tour so farr, Munich stands out because it has this unique, gothic, baroque charm to its buildings and architecture.
Munich city itself is ringed by four ancient gates which used to form the battlements and main entrance into Old Munich covered by foot high walls as security. Only three gates remain to this day: Isartor, Karlstor, Sendlinger Tor.
Since I sent most of the day in Dachau however, it was dusk by the time I arrived back in Munich and the pictures I took of the three ancient gates didn't come out too well .
The only one which I managed to develop well is the pic of Kalstor by Dusk.
Ach....Munich is such a beautiful city....I wish we had more than one day to hang out here...but oh well...it's off to the next destination then!
